How do I get round misconceptions about photographic style?

Faced with the “we only want reportage photography and not posed” My answer is usally, do you like this shot? Yes. Then wouldn’t you like me to pose you like this? and the answer is always yes. And of course they get hundreds of “reportage” shots too.

So work with your photographer in terms of letting them know your likes and dislikes but avoid being too prescriptive.
